Meet Dana
Local Entrepreneur Dana Rideout has been growing her business through passion and dedication for the past 18 years as a licensed therapist. She received her counseling masters from Western Carolina University and started working in Asheville. There, she practiced in community and mental health. In 2006, she moved to Aiken. From 2006 to 2013, Dana worked at Aurora Pavilion with inpatient psychiatric and facilitated the outpatient group program. In 2013, Dana began the transition to working with private practices.
In 2017 she was able to move into her own space, located on Pendleton Street in downtown Aiken. There she has been able to have the leeway to think outside of the box, and flourish as her own boss. She also has an extra space pictured below that she rents out to other therapists as they begin to build their own clients as entrepreneurs.
Dana’s Practice
Dana offers services to a variety of patients typically ranging from the ages of 17-70. She works with clients who suffer any type of mental health challenge such as depression, anxiety or addiction. Dana specializes in trauma patients, whether it be post-traumatic stress or complex trauma. Client’s don’t always meet at her practice although. Depending on the trust level with clients, she is open to meeting at places such as Hopelands Gardens or Hitchcock Woods.
A typical session is an hour long and takes place once a week to once every other week. She aims to only see patients for four to six sessions to encourage the healing process. Dana uses hands-on techniques such as talking, breathing techniques, and yoga postures. Dana uses researched based yoga postures that support physiological growth for clients because of her training in both regular and trauma sensitive yoga.
At her practice, she tries to emit an environment for patients where there is a lot of laughter, and encourages people to know that it doesn’t stay dark for a long time, “99.9% people walk out of this door even after one session and think “wow I didn’t know I could feel that amount of relief in such a short amount of time.””
Dana loves being a small business in Aiken and raves about the kindness of other business owners in Aiken. She thanks the Chamber of Commerce and the Score counselors for their support and encouragement as an entrepreneur in Aiken. She relies on networking groups, word of mouth and her presentations to businesses to find new clients.
Classes Offered
Other than one on one sessions, Dana offers a weekly Midday Midweek Mindfulness class every Wednesday from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. The class is geared toward professionals aiming to reboot from the business week. People are encouraged to stop by whenever they can to reduce physical and mental stress from work. The cost of the class is based on the honor system, such as what would have been paid for lunch that day.
Dana is looking forward to a spring retreat for forest bathing in Hitchcock Woods that will take a mindful walk focusing on the benefits of the woods. She is also offering a support group for Women in Midlife, targeting ages 50-59 that find this time in their life to be challenging.
