Let’s talk school. Some kids love it, many kids dread the thought. From my past school experience, it seems the young people (including myself) who are not big fans of school lack the confidence and proper help they need as individuals to help them succeed in their educational careers.
Luckily, Aiken has the lovely Tara Bostwick to help students and the parents of students through the trials of school.
Retiring after 7 years as the head of Aiken Preparatory’s upper school in 2012, Tara realized her role in helping the education of young people was not over.
“I saw a need in Aiken for individual tutoring, and I love to work with young people,” says Tara. “Their energy and points of view are contagious.”
With her passion for working with students and the importance of their education, Tara created Aiken Educational Services; a business catering to students from elementary school through college in need of guidance and reassurance to reach their goals in school and their future.
Aiken Educational Services provides tutoring in every course available in Aiken County. Armed with a staff of experienced tutors, AES has all of the tools to help students becomes more confident in the classroom. Supplying students with a welcoming and comfortable environment (and delicious snacks), Tara hopes to maintain an atmosphere that does not make her students feel like it is a burden or punishment to receive after school help.
But tutoring is only one of the many services provided through AES.
Tara and her business also assist students in college counseling, organization, a visiting equestrians program, and preparation for the ACT and SAT tests.
The college counseling program at AES aids in a student’s search to find the school that will be their best fit, apply for different colleges, and provide assistance in writing the essays schools require with their applications.
On top of all of that, college counseling helps take stress off of the parents of the students on the hunt for their perfect school. Applying for college can be very stressful; not just for the student, but for the whole family. “I like to say that our counseling program helps families become families again, “Mrs. Bostwick says with a laugh, “I’ve had parents come to me and say ‘Thank you so much, we can actually talk at the dinner table again.’”
During my own high school career, I started working with Aiken Educational Services for tutoring, a quiet place to do my work after school, SAT prep, and college counseling. I credit my gain in confidence, rise in my GPA, and my acceptance to multiple schools (including the College of Charleston) to Tara and the amazing tutors who helped me throughout my high school career.
